IN CHARACTER
Name: Jaina Solo
Canon: Star Wars
Canon Point: End of “Young Jedi Knights: Crisis at Crystal Reef”
Age: 15

History: wiki - http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jaina_Solo_Fel

Personality: At her base, Jaina combines the strong will and logical decisiveness of her mother with her father’s casual wit and penchant for getting into trouble. Starting with Young Jedi Knights, the girl was portrayed as a tomboy more likely to physically lose herself crawling into a machine and run around with engine grease streaking her face than play with fashion (although she has been known to admire her mother’s hairstyles and attempt mimicking them on special occasions). It was her twin brother Jacen who pursued the normally feminine-coded empathy and playing with animals like a disney princess -- Jaina was more interested in challenge and competition, playing with tools and the rush of flying. These themes remained at her core as she grew up throughout the old Expanded Universe (aka “Legends”).

Coming from YJK, the girl tends to be more energetic, friendlier and all-around less prone to carrying around emotional baggage than she will be when she grows up. However, one constant is that Jaina tends to choose pragmatism over most things, especially diplomacy. One of her ideas of fun is memorizing star charts and engineering schematics (she gets psyched to go through a troublesome parts scavenger hunt and go repair a station for a guy), and her brother knows the easiest way to persuade her to do something is to challenge her with a problem-solving task. There are noticeable exceptions to her practicality due to youthful excitability and fancy: let us never forget that she agrees an excellent way to improve on a translator droid’s ability to serve is to make it fly.

The downside of her practicality is she prioritizes it over diplomacy and poise. She lacks a certain amount of tact, to the point that when she is trying to convince her old friend to come back from the dark side, she realizes she’s trying to analyze and correct him like a malfunctioning machine instead of connecting with him. Another constant is a lack of patience for obstructions, as being told not to get involved in something invariably leads to Jaina simply sticking her nose into things anyway -- when her parents won’t let Jaina have her own spaceship she goes behind their backs to try salvaging one, when Lando tells the twins to stay away from the boarding point of an Imperial raiding party they go to see the action anyway, when EVERYONE tells the kids not to go bother a political extremist group they sneak in and get themselves caught.

Relatedly, Jaina is stubborn and willing to stick to her guns even when it would be a good idea to exercise more discretion; take, for example, attempting to argue down a dark jedi master in front of his students, despite being his captive. As long as we’re discussing the negative, it’s worth noting that because of Jaina’s strong Force bond with her twin, she can get somewhat depressed as long as he’s not around; to her, Jacen is practically part of her, and throughout her life she will sometimes wax poetic about there being a place in her heart that is his, etc. Long story short, she’s used to always being able to feel his presence and knowing how he’s doing even if they’re separated. When it comes to a problem she can’t solve, like her brother not being around anymore, she tends to cope by burying herself in something else; for example, at one point when she and Tenel Ka are frustrated by something they can’t act on, they occupy themselves with performing maintenance. On the point of her brother not being around, as a Force-sensitive twin Jaina has a special bond with brother Jacen; in their earliest years they could finish each other’s sentences and hatch a troublesome scheme to confound babysitters without really hashing it out outloud; going into their teen years it’s written more as an especially strong empathic bond regardless of whether they’re near each other.

This has an interesting effect on where Jaina stands on privacy and the use of her gifts; growing up with essentially no barriers and an obvious Force talent, she tends to feel better if someone she considers important doesn’t try keeping anything from her. She also tends to take clear pride and enjoyment in the exercise of Jedi skills, where members of previous generations would have been trained to try avoiding emotions. Uncle Luke has reminded the kids not to take the Force too lightly, but he’s generally been very encouraging of embracing positive emotions and connections, instead of trying to be a disconnected robot. Basically: don’t treat lightsabers or the Force like a toy, but a developing student should certainly practice to improve her mastery. And as for emotions and connections, well, by accident the Young Jedi Knights are stepping around the tripping point of the previous generation. Trying to ignore their emotions led the old Jedi to practically destroy themselves; the young jedi are simply trying to deal positively with what they’ve got. For example, if Jacen and Jaina have crushes on their team and manage to overcome teen nerves, why not enjoy exploring those feelings? Or it might be as simple as indulging a food fight with the other students.

So yeah, for all that stubbornness and troublemaking, Jaina’s really pretty fun. She’d rather banter with you and elbow you in the ribs, and as much as she might roll her eyes and groan, she appreciates dumb jokes like the ones her brother tells (Why does a TIE fighter scream in space? It misses its mothership!). Reminiscing with a close friend and developing crush, she’ll gladly focus on memories of sneaking out to pull pranks like reprograming holographic zoo animals to sing over problematic decisions he’s made in the recent past. Basically, she just wants to explore and take things apart and indulge in challenges with her friends. If that leads to an adventure that lets them do some good along the way, so much the better!

It’s also necessary to talk about old and new universes. When Disney bought Star Wars, it decided to end the timeline Jaina’s from and start semi-fresh; Jaina will be surprised to learn that somewhere out there is a timeline in which her parents had a different kid and in which her mom isn’t the leader of a galactic government. Jaina’s pretty positive about her family life at this canon point, but as she grows up she starts to side-eye the early years when her parents sent the kids away. It was to protect the kids from a worrying tendency to get targeted for kidnappings, but going into adulthood Jaina slowly develops a question about whether Leia wanted her around. This may play awkwardly with family members not recognizing her, though she’ll try to plow through it with no shortage of determination. There’s also going to be a lot of questions that go along with meeting people like an alternate timeline brother and a mix of positive and negative feelings about other timeline shenanigans such as meeting her grandpa; she canonically feels a beat of fear when confronted with a fighting hologram of Darth Vader, but she also had Uncle Luke teaching her about the good that had lingered in Anakin. It’s hard to predict how these meetings will play out -- it depends a lot on the context and what the other characters say. But it’s safe to say she’s going to do her best to drag the details out of people, get the big picture, and see if there’s some way to take advantage of jumbled timelines to build a brighter future.

Contracts: Jaina would easily sign onto the ship for the opportunity to help people, but also in her own interests to get to explore a strange new ship, play with new technology, and explore new places. And, yes, because it appears to be the way to eventually get home -- but the heart of Young Jedi Knights is that it is fun to set out on an adventure and see new things. Sure, it wasn’t fun when Dark Jedi kidnapped them and tried turning them into agents of evil, but instead of dwelling on it as a trauma they barrel on to things like shooting competitions next time dad flies them home, and at the canon point Jaina is being drawn from she is starting to see herself as a truly capable Jedi. Surely the best thing for everyone is for her to come on board and start being a meddling kid.

Abilities/Skills: In canon, Jaina has a natural talent at piloting and engineering, and is learning to be a competent swordswoman (she’s not at the level of fighting you’d see in the prequel trilogy, but she is capable of planting her feet and providing a long-term defense against several enemies so a partner can lob counterattacks from behind her).

As a Jedi, her main trick is the Force. It’s worth noting that Jaina lacks experience at this point, so compared to other Jedi she may come up short on finesse with Force abilities. To boil it down:
-Senses: The Force is a connection to all things, so drawing on that connection naturally leads to some benefits in what you can notice. A jedi is able to tell what’s around them without actual sight, and is able to sense danger; the iconic example is being able to cover your eyes and block lasers with a sword. A jedi also has the benefit of empathy and sensing light/dark alignments. If there’s ever a Jacen Solo around, she has a much stronger sense of him than with most people.

-Telekinetics: A jedi is able to move things around without needing to touch them.

-Mind tricks: A classic, but one Jaina’s not very good at. Jedi can nudge and persuade people mentally, but someone with decent will can resist. Jaina struggles to persuade people of anything, and this will be drawn on in RP as a reason for others to ignore it should it come up; I’m generally uninterested in having her exert any mental control over others and this ability will only ever be used after consulting another player on what they’d be interested in doing.

-Mobility: Jedi can use the Force to perform bullshit acrobatics. This is mostly the ability to perform bigger jumps, flip around when necessary and to stick oneself to slippery surfaces (as Jaina grows up, on occasion she’ll do something like stick herself to the ceiling of a tunnel to hide from an enemy).

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Gearhead - Jaina’s able to not only salvage but actually improve upon a twenty-year-old crashed starfighter at an age where we’d probably be playing with model rockets. She outright memorizes star charts and technical schematics.
Optimistic pragmatist - The simplest solution is often the best solution. But at this age with Jaina, pragmatism doesn’t mean compromising morals for an easy path, either. Instead, for example, an extremist group is planning to hit the galaxy with horrible bioweapons? Just destroy the weapons.

Weaknesses:
Pride and privilege - Jaina is the child of galactic heroes, and she is convinced that everyone is watching her with high expectations as a result, a particular narrative focus for her as YJK wraps up and New Jedi Order begins. What will she contribute to the galaxy? Will she be the next Han Solo or the next Leia? On occasion she slips and assumes there is a bit of leeway in the rules for her, such as when she assumes if a military commander knew classified information relevant to her that he would have shared it with her to spare some emotional grief. She also has been known to overlook the struggles of her orphan scavenger friend. In short, Jaina has led a privileged life, and sometimes the resulting blind spots need to be pointed out.
Mechanically-minded - Sometimes, Jaina’s difficulty with diplomacy is the fact that she’s into engineering. When she’s trying to talk Zekk down from a fight and redeem him from the dark side, it takes a while for her to realize that she isn’t getting through because she’s trying to fix him like she would fix an engine.

Items: -brown jumpsuit
-Multitool; per http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Multitool -- picture a small swiss army knife power tool.
-personal lightsaber; perfectly understandable if this is held back.

SAMPLES
Network Sample: We need gas.

[There’s a bright-eyed young woman peering closely into the video feed. She’s managed not to get engine grease on her so far, but it may just be a matter of time. Either way, Jaina has assigned herself a project whether anyone wanted her to or not.]

Here’s the details. It seems to me these engines have a serious problem with shedding heat. No offense to anyone who’s been working on them -- it’s actually really hard to shunt heat in space. Space isn’t cold. Or...okay, it’s cold for an organic being, but mostly it’s just a vacuum. Set your drink in an airlock and cycle it, and it’ll boil before it solidifies. So if you put a giant heat source on a ship in space where there’s nothing to touch and spread the heat to, you lose the easiest way of shedding it, which would be shunting it somewhere else.

So we get tibanna gas. [She waves her hand, as though forestalling an inevitable counterargument.] I know, it’s usually used in weapons systems for blaster bolts. But what you might not know is if it’s non-spin-sealed, you can use it as a hyperdrive coolant. It shouldn’t be too hard to modify that and plug it into the systems to help us lose a little more of the heat.

I bet the holds will be a lot more comfortable, then. [Someone may have also missed the point of the holds being uncomfortable.]

We just have to go looking for some gas giants. Anyone have access to the local star charts? Let me know.
